Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles has said that Australia would consider deploying peacekeepers to Gaza if requested, following the recently signed ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the two-year conflict.
The comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump and global leaders formalized a peace deal in Egypt, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough after Hamas released the remaining Israeli hostages from the 2023 attacks. Trump described the development as the “historic dawn of a new Middle East.”
Marles praised the pause in violence and acknowledged the progress achieved through international cooperation, calling it “an incredible achievement.” However, he stopped short of declaring the war fully over, emphasizing that Australia’s next steps would depend on international coordination and peacekeeping needs in the region.
Australia’s willingness to assist in Gaza’s stabilization and reconstruction reflects its broader commitment to supporting global peace and humanitarian efforts.
