Australia Post has temporarily suspended parcel shipments to the United States and Puerto Rico in response to new import tariffs that will take effect on August 29. The move comes after Washington scrapped the “de minimis” rule, which previously allowed packages under US$800 to enter duty-free.
Under the new system, Australian parcels will be subject to a baseline 10% tariff, impacting businesses that rely on low-value shipments to American customers. However, gifts valued under US$100 (about AUD 150), along with letters and documents, remain exempt.
Australia Post said the suspension is necessary while it works with US and international partners to develop a solution that ensures compliance with the new customs requirements. Customers will be notified once services are ready to resume.
The Australian government expressed concern about the new tariff rule, warning that it will raise costs for US consumers and create significant disruption for small businesses. Officials emphasized that efforts are underway to minimize the impact and restore parcel services as soon as possible.
