Trump’s Gaza Initiative Reduced to Small-Scale Economic Pilot Program

by admin477351

An ambitious initiative for Gaza’s recovery, initially backed by the Peace Board under US President Donald Trump, has been scaled down significantly. Originally conceived as a comprehensive reconstruction effort for the entire territory, the plan has now been reduced to a more modest pilot project located near Rafah in southern Gaza.

The scaled-down pilot project aims to offer temporary housing solutions for tens of thousands of Palestinians who have been displaced. This initiative would be supported by a civilian administration run by Palestinians, a police force trained locally, and an international stabilization force. Despite these plans, officials have indicated that the project is unlikely to become operational before the end of 2026.

Currently, preparatory activities are minimal, with logistical infrastructure still in the development phase near the Kerem Shalom crossing. Construction of the pilot camp itself has not yet commenced. The timeline for the project is also contingent on evolving political and security conditions, particularly in light of Israel’s upcoming elections later this year.

Several factors have contributed to delays in the plan’s execution, including ongoing hostilities, limitations on humanitarian access, and disagreements over the terms of reconstruction, security protocols, and the future governance of Gaza. These challenges have complicated the project’s progression and timeline.

Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to secure necessary funding, establish an international security force, and negotiate agreements on humanitarian access and long-term stability for the region. Despite these efforts, there remains considerable uncertainty around financing, the implementation of the project, and the broader political landscape that surrounds it.
