During a visit from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has committed to enhancing Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. This support is part of a broader initiative spearheaded by the United States, which sees Canada contributing C$350 million (approximately US$253 million) to bolster Ukraine’s military resources. The assistance is timely, as Ukraine is currently grappling with increased missile and drone assaults from Russia.
In addition to military aid, Canada is set to reinforce Ukraine’s energy sector with C$450 million in loan guarantees. This financial backing aims to facilitate repairs to energy facilities that have suffered damage, increase energy storage capacities, and ensure that vital services like hospitals have a stable electricity supply. These measures are crucial in supporting Ukraine’s resilience amidst ongoing conflicts.
Highlighting a long-term vision for cooperation, Carney and Zelenskyy signed an agreement to work toward a “hundred-year partnership.” This expansive collaboration will encompass areas such as defense, critical minerals, and energy, underscoring the strategic importance of their bilateral relationship.
In a move to further support Ukraine on the battlefield, Canada announced that 30% of its newly produced domestic drones would be allocated to Ukraine. President Zelenskyy stated that these drones would play a vital role in aiding Ukrainian military operations and safeguarding civilians.
Looking ahead, President Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York, possibly during the United Nations General Assembly sessions later this month. This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to revive peace negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict.
