The Alberta government is poised to take a significant step forward in its ambitious plan to establish a high-speed rail system connecting the major cities of Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary. This fall, the province intends to issue a formal request for proposals from private companies interested in developing this transportation project.
Premier Danielle Smith has confirmed that the federal government will support the initiative by referring it to its Major Projects Office once a suitable private-sector partner is selected. The provincial authorities aim to finalize their choice of a preferred proponent by April 2027.
This proposed rail service is designed to not only link the three cities but also to provide connections to the Calgary and Edmonton international airports, thereby enhancing transportation infrastructure across the province. As Alberta continues to experience rapid population growth, this project is seen as a vital response to the increasing demand for efficient travel options within the Edmonton-Calgary corridor, which houses approximately 80 percent of the province’s population.
Key to the project’s development will be extensive consultations with Indigenous communities, local municipalities, and the public.
