Beginning in September, Spotify will implement new strategies to identify and manage the presence of AI-generated artists on its platform. To help users recognize these artificial identities, the streaming service plans to introduce an “AI persona” label on both artist profiles and their corresponding tracks. These AI-created personas will be excluded from Spotify’s personalized recommendations by default, a measure designed to ensure that genuine musicians do not lose visibility to AI-generated counterparts.

Spotify acknowledges the growing prevalence of AI-generated music and has set out to provide transparency for its users. While artists will have the opportunity to disclose if their identities are AI-generated, Spotify will also employ a combination of human reviewers and AI-driven tools to detect undisclosed AI personas. This dual approach aims to maintain the integrity of the platform by ensuring all content is properly identified.

The initiative comes as the music industry faces a surge in AI-generated content. Previously, Spotify revealed that it had removed 75 million spam tracks within a year, demonstrating the vast amount of artificial and often low-quality content infiltrating music streaming services. This move by Spotify highlights the platform’s commitment to quality control and protecting real artists from being overshadowed by non-human creations.

As generative AI technology becomes increasingly integrated into the music scene, Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency. Listeners are showing a growing interest in understanding whether the music they enjoy is the product of human creativity or AI ingenuity, and Spotify’s new measures aim to address this curiosity.
