A breakthrough in medical technology has led to the development of an artificial intelligence tool capable of examining routine electrocardiograms (ECGs) in under two seconds to identify individuals at high risk for heart failure and heart valve disease. This advanced tool is the result of training on millions of ECGs, allowing it to detect patterns that may escape a doctor’s notice during a typical ECG examination.

The AI tool was put to the test in a study involving 67,000 patients in the United States, where it successfully identified up to 81% of those with heart failure and up to 90% with heart valve disease. This capability is particularly significant given that ECGs are among the most frequently conducted medical tests globally, with approximately one billion carried out annually. However, for patients suspected of heart conditions, the next step often involves echocardiograms, which can entail extended wait times.

While the AI tool is not designed to serve as a standalone diagnostic device, it could play a crucial role in assisting doctors by highlighting high-risk patients who should be prioritized for echocardiograms and additional testing. This prioritization could enable earlier initiation of treatment, potentially improving patient outcomes. Additionally, researchers are optimistic about the technology’s future applications, suggesting it could analyze ECGs conducted for other medical purposes and uncover previously undetected cardiac issues.

The team behind this innovation is also looking into the possibility of creating portable ECG devices powered by AI, which could be utilized by healthcare professionals to enhance early detection methods. This could make the process not only quicker but also more accessible, benefiting a broader range of patients.
