India is setting a significant milestone in its international trade strategy with the implementation of a free trade agreement (FTA) with New Zealand, set to take effect on October 20, 2026. This comes as India intensifies efforts to secure a comprehensive trade deal with Canada by the end of the year. The agreements are integral to India’s broader agenda of expanding export markets and solidifying global trade partnerships.

The India-New Zealand FTA, formalized in April 2026, will enable Indian exports to enter New Zealand duty-free, benefiting sectors such as textiles, leather, footwear, engineering goods, and processed agricultural products. This agreement underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its export capabilities and diversifying its trade relations.

In parallel, India is negotiating the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which encompasses a wide array of trade aspects, including goods and services, investment, and intellectual property rights. The fifth round of these negotiations recently concluded in Ottawa, with subsequent discussions slated for early November in New Delhi. This ambitious deal aims to establish a robust framework for bilateral trade between India and Canada.

Beyond these agreements, India is actively pursuing trade negotiations with other nations, including the United States, Israel, Chile, and Peru. Additionally, India is reviewing or upgrading existing trade agreements with countries like Australia, ASEAN, South Korea, and Sri Lanka. These initiatives are strategically designed to diversify India’s export markets and enhance access for Indian businesses in an evolving global trade landscape.

These developments highlight India’s proactive approach to strengthening its international trade relationships and adapting to changing global economic conditions. By securing new agreements and revisiting existing ones, India aims to position itself as a key player in the international market, ensuring sustained economic growth and development.
